Case Study Offshore Oil and Gas company
Project Highlights
Retrofit for customised RO Prefilter
BHF worked with both customer and supplier to manage the design process of a new proprietary filter cartridge to replace their existing low performing, high-cost cartridge filter taking into account its unique size, sealing mechanism and construction.
Improving filter life from 3 days to 2 weeks
Amazon provided absolute rated filter media, with increased surface area due to its construction, resulting in
- 3-5 times the volume throughput at tighter filtration efficiencies.
Improved SDI feed to the RO membranes
Less operator time, improved efficiency and reduced operating costs – Win Win Win!
BHF worked with both customer and supplier to manage the design process of a new proprietary filter cartridge to replace their existing low performing, high-cost cartridge filter taking into account its unique size, sealing mechanism and construction.
Reduced product usage resulting in less landfill
Through increased filter life and increased volume throughput, the quantity of filter has been reduced by up to 5 times. Less landfill, improved sustainability!

Client Profile
One of the world’s largest petroleum and chemical manufacturing company, providing onshore and offshore processing of exploration, extraction, and refining.
Location: PNG
What were the challenges?
Our client had experienced substantially reduced filter life on their RO prefiltration, resulting in higher order volume requirements which was both challenging for the supplier to fulfill, and costly due to local stockholding requirements.
The project in Papua New Guinea, being offshore posed several logistical challenges.
The quality of the filtrate from the existing supplier was poor. This was a result from poor filter removal efficiency and lack of surface area, which led to increased changeouts, higher stock usage, and increased running costs for the RO prefilters and downstream RO as a result of more frequent membrane cleaning and shorter life
What was the solution?
BHF were engaged to produce an alternative filter, that would fit the existing hardware, while improving filtration efficiency, service life, and better protection of the downstream RO membranes.
BHF provided a technical engineer who worked with the customer to get a used sample cartridge, which was then sent on to Amazon filters. They developed a high efficiency absolute media and were able to resolve the fit of the filter in the existing competitor hardware.
Filters were sent to site for trial. The customer measured differential pressure and volume throughput and the frequency of downstream cleaning on the RO membranes required.
What were the specific results achieved?
The overall conclusion of the trial carried out reported that the Amazon SupaPleat FFC cartridge exceeded the life expectancy, resulting in 3-5 times the volume passed before blockage.
Up to 80% improvement in volume throughput, saving:
- operator hours to changeout filters, reduced RO CIP and membrane change
- filter costs by more than 30%
- downtime of RO system
- water usage
- CIP cleaning chemicals
- increased RO membrane life
