Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane. In RO, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, retaining the particles and microorganisms on the pressurized side of the membrane and allowing the passage of pure water molecules to the other side.

Reverse Osmosis processes have been widely used for separation and concentration (recovery) of solutes in many fields. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of molecules and ions from solutions and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water.
